Responsible for performing the full scope of nursing practice involving a high level of autonomy and independent practice. Plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care consistent with medical treatment and care in collaboration with a physician. Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates nursing care of individuals requiring emergency nursing measures. Performs comprehensive physical examinations, secures health histories, performs or orders laboratory tests and conducts other appropriate procedure to assess the health status of patients or clients. Provides direct nursing care and/or directs professional, technical and paraprofessional nursing staff in management of selected patients with emphasis on high risk difficult-to-manage cases, ex: suicidal children, adolescents and adult patients; highly combative, non compliant cases; adolescent obstetric patients with medical complications; childhood and brittle (unstable) diabetic cases; multi-system failure cases; patients dealing with dying, terminal illness, etc. Advises patient, family members and others regarding various health problems, prescribed treatments, and use of drugs. Creates and maintains accurate records, appropriate legal documents and other reports of client care consistent with the law. Collaborates with the medical and nursing administrators to plan, implement and evaluate programs to assure competent and effective clinical practice that advance programmatic goals, and that strengthen the systems that support the quality of patient care. Serves as researcher in creating and testing methods of nursing in the area of specialization (ex: Psychiatric mental health, pediatrics, maternal and child health, adult health, community (public) health, gerontology, etc.) with emphasis on the overall effectiveness of the methods. Counsels groups of families and/or staff members after crisis situations or in the care of highly contagious disease, ex: AIDS patients, etc. Assist in developing departmental educational programs based upon standards of practice; conducts formal and informal classes and experiences for staff to support and promote the patient care programs. PUBLIC HEALTH OPTION: Provides advanced primary or preventive health care for individuals, families or communities at an advanced or expert clinician level; assesses individual health, analyzes data to determine health and nursing care needed, plans a strategy to meet identified health care needs, evaluates responses to intervention and makes changes in care or treatment as needed; identifies and allocates public health care resources or coordinates and evaluates other health resources necessary to meet individual or group needs at the most appropriate level. Reviews and analyzes laboratory tests and other diagnostic data; determines diagnoses; prescribes pharmaceuticals according to the collaborative agreement; develops goals and strategies for meeting individual health care needs; consults with physicians or other providers as needed.
